SNEAK PEEK AT BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE

By Melissa Grey

DC has just released a preview for next week's Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #1 and it looks like Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner are pulling out all the stops to deliver a story worthy of the Watchmen name. The Before Watchmen series has inspired some of the most impassioned discussion the comic book community has seen in years and the debate on creator's rights and publishing ethics shows no signs of stopping soon. Despite the storm of criticism facing the series' launch, DC's superstar writers and artists are most certainly rising to the occasion.

“I hate you! Do you understand? They all know what you were. They laugh at me because I’m your daughter.”

DC Co-Publisher Dan Didio weighed in on Silk Spectre's prequel: “One of my personal favorites is Amanda Conner’s Silk Spectre. . . When Darwyn signed up with Amanda we really wanted to capture the spirit of Silk Spectre and a period of time, and he did the basic plot and Amanda ran with it from there… this is probably the quietest of the stories, but I think one of the most heartfelt stories. This is a coming of age story with Silk Spectre as she starts to discover herself and separates herself from what she was expected to be by her mother… There are scenes in Amanda’s work where she slips into fantasy. She’s going into Silk Spectre’s head as she’s growing up and she’s creating a fantasy for herself, so her art style changes a little bit in that.”
